ADCP regatta

Czech Republic, 2022

Report from the event

Exchange of experiences and methods in flow measurements

September 13th - 15th, 2022

Vranov nad Dyjí, Southern Moravia, Czech Republic

History

As new technologies were implemented in the daily practice of CHMI, the need for verification of new instrument appeared. After testing of ADCPs at several different profiles among the CHMI network, decision to find stable and verified profile was made and gauging station in Vranov nad Dyjí was found as the most suitable for many reasons.

Location

The most important benefit of the selected station is its position under the reservoir of the same name (Vranov), where local reservoirs managers can control stable discharge for several hours. Parameters of the channel profile seem almost optimal for wide range of ADCP types with average depth of about 0,8 m, width more than 30 m and average speed of 0,5 m/s. Straight and uniform channel reach and flow provides good opportunity to place even more than three equal transect profiles with more or less same conditions for discharge measurements. In addition both banks of the river are open and accessible enough for safe work of operators and spreading organization background as well.

Mission

  • Almost annual organization of the ADCP regattas at this place provides lot of experience and feedback to our employees. We would like to share this information with wider community of hydrological practitioners not only in our region but to the whole WMO family.
  • The main goal of the event is to present the most up-to-date methods and processes in the field of ADCP discharge measurements and evaluations using the latest software.
  • Bringing ADCP experts to one place and sharing their knowledge should support international cooperation and coordination and provide higher data quality.

Participation

  • Introducing presentations from participating institutions are expected to provide description of where and how ADCP are used in their daily practice.
  • ADCP regatta is designed as practical workshop focused on field measurements. Participants will be divided in teams operating with one certain type of ADCP. Method and practice of measuring itself will follow prescribed instructions to reach as most comparable data as possible.
  • Results and metadata will be analysed by international experts using the free available software that provides uncertainty data evaluation and lots of more.
  • Discussion and brainstorming is expected to get valuable feedback from wide range of ADCP users.
